Premierminister Srettha Thavisin war diese Woche damit beschäftigt, für die Landbrückeninitiative in Südthailand zu werben. Srettha besuchte am Montag die südthailändische Stadt Ranong und verkündete dort eine populistische Botschaft von Arbeitsplätzen und Wohlstand, angetrieben vom Interesse potenzieller internationaler Investoren an dem Projekt. Zu den weißen Rittern des Projekts gehört die Dubai Port World Company, ein Pionier in Sachen Logistik und Welthandel.

Der Forscher Sompong Sirisoponsil von der Chulalongkorn University warnte davor, dass die immense Größe des Projekts die Investoren zurückhaltend machen könnte.
Ein Haupthindernis war der mühsame und teure Prozess des Ent- und Umladens von Fracht.
Kurz gesagt, bedeutet das Landbrückenprojekt, dass die Verlader ihre Fracht in Ranong oder Chumphon entladen. Anschließend müssten sie sie 90 km von Ranong nach Chumphon oder umgekehrt transportieren.
Nach dem Verlassen der Landbrücke müssten sie die Ladung in den Häfen von Chumphon oder Ranong erneut umladen.
Dies wird Geld kosten, zusätzliche Sicherheitsrisiken schaffen und Zeit kosten.
Im Jahr 2021 stellte die Chulalongkorn-Universität außerdem fest, dass es offenbar an Unterstützung seitens der etablierten Verlader mangelt.
Diese Reedereien befördern derzeit Fracht durch die Straße von Malakka.
Der aktuelle Plan sieht zwei Tiefwasserhäfen mit einer Kapazität von 20 Millionen Containern pro Jahr vor. Der größte thailändische Tiefseehafen, Laem Chabang, schlägt dagegen nur 8 Millionen Container pro Jahr um.
Die Kosten für die geplante Landbrücke wurden für das Jahr 2021 auf 300 Mrd. ฿ geschätzt. Ursprünglich war sie Teil eines Plans, der vorsah, dass Thailand eine eigene staatliche Schifffahrtslinie einrichtet.
Einer der wichtigsten Aspekte dieses Plans war die Sicherheit Thailands in turbulenten geopolitischen Gewässern.

Am Montag warben der Premierminister und wichtige Kabinettsmitglieder in Ranong aktiv für das Landbrückenprojekt. Es wurde als Geldbringer für Südthailand dargestellt.
Am Dienstag betonte der Pressesprecher des Premierministers, Herr Chai, dass das Projekt von den Investoren gut aufgenommen worden sei.
Es wurde letztes Jahr auf dem APEC-Gipfel (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) in San Francisco vorgestellt. Danach prüften Investoren in Tokio den Landbrückenplan, und später wurde das Projekt in Davos vorangetrieben.
Der Sprecher von Srettha bezweifelt, dass die thailändischen Medien dem Projekt gegenüber negativ eingestellt sind, während ausländische Investoren und Geräte aufgeschlossen sind
Chai teilte den Reportern mit, dass hochrangige Investoren und Hafenmanagementexperten den Plan prüfen. Sicherlich ist dies der erste Entwurf des Vorschlags in einer Übersicht. Er kann sich durchaus noch ändern.
Der Sprecher des Premierministers bezweifelte die negative Haltung gegenüber dem Projekt in den thailändischen Medien.
Er wies darauf hin, dass sich das Verkehrsministerium der Umweltaspekte des Projekts sehr wohl bewusst sei.
Gleichzeitig handele es sich um einen Vorschlag, der der kränkelnden thailändischen Wirtschaft enorme Vorteile bringen könne.

The Thai Land Bridge is a proposed rail and road transport corridor in Southern Thailand that would connect the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand. This has been touted as an alternative to the Thai Canal, which would cut a canal across Southern Thailand as a short cut to the Strait of Malacca.
Deep sea ports would be built at either end of the “bridge”, where containers would be unloaded, transported across the peninsula, and continue on another ship.
A land alternative to a canal was proposed in the 1990s. That route was from Pak Bara in Satun on the Andaman side, to Songkhla on the Gulf of Thailand side, via Hat Yai. The most recent route preference is from Ranong to Chumphon, and a decision on the route is expected to be made by June 2021.
The Ranong to Chumphon route might be incorporated into a planned Ranong to Chumphon railway, but so far these two projects appear to be separate.
The Thai Land Bridge proposal is not to be confused with the Thai Bridge proposal, which is a sea bridge across the Bay of Bangkok.
